ABOUT DR. KLEINBAUM
As a Periodontist, my goal is to achieve a strong oral health foundation - or create one for you - with the latest technologies, techniques, and collaboration. Your gum and bone health are the foundation of a healthy smile, and it is the stability of this foundation that can carry us through all of life’s memories - meals, emotions and overall health. When periodontal diseases and conditions compromise our teeth, it is imperative that we explore solutions for restoring bone, gum and teeth for optimal function, esthetics and comfort.
As a Periodontist, one of my favorite aspects of my career is building a relationship with patients and educating them about tooth and bone loss. I am eager to be alongside my patients for the journey. My approach is to start gradually, get patients out of pain and discomfort, and develop a long-term plan that involves collaboration and input from the entire dental team. Teamwork and communication are the backbone to successful treatment in dentistry.
My work as a faculty member in the Periodontics Department at Tufts School of Dental Medicine allows me to stay abreast of the latest techniques and research in Periodontics, while also passing along my passions about soft tissue management, soft and hard tissue grafting, dental implants, and all things oral health!

OUR SERVICES
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root and provide a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture. Over time, the implant fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration, ensuring strong, long-lasting support. Dental implants help restore function, maintain jawbone health, and improve the appearance of a patient’s smile.
Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is carefully removed from its socket in the jawbone, often due to decay, damage, infection, or overcrowding. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and may be simple or surgical depending on the tooth’s condition. Tooth extractions help protect overall oral health and can be the first step toward restorative treatments like implants or orthodontics.
Soft Tissue Grafting
Soft tissue grafting is a dental procedure used to restore or enhance gum tissue, often to treat gum recession or improve aesthetics. It involves placing tissue—usually from the patient’s palate or a donor—over areas with thinning or receding gums. This helps protect tooth roots, reduce sensitivity, and support long-term oral health.
Laser Periodontal Treatment
Laser periodontal treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses focused laser energy to remove diseased gum tissue and bacteria from around the teeth, promoting healing and regeneration. This technique can effectively treat gum disease with less discomfort, reduced bleeding, and faster recovery compared to traditional surgery. Laser therapy helps preserve healthy tissue, improve gum attachment, and support long-term oral health.
Canine Exposure
Canine exposure is a minor surgical procedure used to help guide an impacted canine tooth into its proper position in the mouth, often in coordination with orthodontic treatment. During the procedure, gum tissue is carefully lifted to expose the impacted tooth, allowing a bracket or other device to be attached to aid its movement. This treatment is important for achieving proper alignment, function, and aesthetics in the smile.
Bone Regeneration
Guided bone regeneration is a surgical technique used to encourage the growth of new bone in areas where it is deficient, often in preparation for dental implants. A specialized membrane is placed over the bone defect to protect it and allow bone cells to regenerate while preventing soft tissue from interfering. This procedure helps rebuild a strong, healthy foundation for future restorative treatments.
Oral Pathology
Oral pathology is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, and related structures. It involves examining abnormalities such as lesions, tumors, or infections to determine their cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Early detection through oral pathology is essential for effectively treating both benign and serious conditions.
Periodontal Disease Management
Periodontal disease management involves the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of gum disease to prevent its progression and protect oral health. Treatments may include deep cleanings, medications, laser therapy, or surgical interventions to remove infection and restore gum and bone support. Effective management helps preserve natural teeth, improve overall oral health, and reduce the risk of systemic health issues linked to gum disease.
Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery is a periodontal procedure designed to treat advanced gum disease by reshaping and smoothing damaged bone around the teeth. During the surgery, infected gum tissue is removed, and irregular bone surfaces are reshaped to eliminate pockets where bacteria can thrive. This helps reduce infection, improve gum attachment, and support the long-term stability of the teeth.
Deep Cleaning
Dental deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease by removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline. The process smooths the tooth roots to help gums reattach and heal, reducing inflammation and pocket depth. Deep cleaning is essential for preventing the progression of periodontal disease and maintaining overall oral health.
